What has been the current scenario in the education sector because of the global pandemic? How are the educational institutions addressing the issues and concerns raised by their students and their family members? To get a better understanding on the above and their Post COVID plan, four prominent personalities representing renowned schools and colleges in Nepal, got together for the “Transformation of Education: Post Pandemic” webinar held on 3rd June, 2020 by Brand Leaders Nepal, with Creative Partner: Digital Advantage, and powered by edusanjal.com. The panelists for this webinar were Mr. Ashish Tiwari, Principal and Director of Ace Institute of Management, Mr. Medin Lamichhane, Principal of Ullens Education Foundation, Mr. Narottam Aryal, Executive Director/ Principal of Kings College and Miss. Rashmi Sharma, Executive Director of Kathmandu Don Bosco College. The webinar was moderated by Mr. Rajan Koirala, Chief Business Officer of edusanjal.com. The panelists discussed the effectiveness of ongoing online classes and the new form and norm of online education.

Key Takeaways:

Mr. Narrottam Aryal, Executive Director/Principal, Kings College

  • This is not the right time to argue about the public versus private institutions.
  • Rather than giving out the problems, we need to ask what is possible during this crisis.
  • Together we should be able to capitalize the opportunity. Everyone should unite together to face the challenges as everybody deserves access to quality education.

Mr. Medin Lamichhane, Principal, Ullens Education Foundation

  • There has been a big loss in education and we can’t bear any more loss. Therefore, the state should address this issue as soon as possible.
  • The COVID pandemic has brought us to take a different approach towards learning and to think of other ways to impart education.
  • There should be a proper planning and vision with respect to future job demands.

Mr. Ashish Tiwari, Principal and Director, Ace Institute of Management

  • Online courses as well institutions for higher education will coexist side by side. Hence, it is a good opportunity to reevaluate and revisit the understanding, knowledge and perspective towards education.
  • One size doesn’t fit all types of learning design. We have to understand that learners have different needs.
  • We have to stop glamorizing exams and grades as learners do not come to learn but to pass their exams.

Miss. Rashmi Sharma, Executive Director of Kathmandu Don Bosco College

  • If we choose to do something new, we can do it now and get away from the locked, traditional mentality.
  • Conventional exams for three hours shouldn’t be the parameter of students’ knowledge as it is based on what they remember and recall.
  • Private institutions should have collaborations with the public sector as well, so that students from the public sector get to witness and experience what private institutions have been doing so far.

With the shift in working modules, i.e- working from home, how are the leaders or the workforce handling this emotionally? Keeping their concerns and problems in mind, Brand Leaders Nepal organized a webinar about “Emotional Impact on employees during and after COVID-19” on 27th May, 2020, in partnership with Digital Advantage, and powered by merojob.com, to discuss anxiety and emotional challenges the workforce could be dealing with. The employers are facing the intricate task of motivating the workforce to work from home, and sustain the work life balance, as well as convincing the workforce to resume the Pre-Covid work style has not been easy for employers. The webinar stressed the importance of casual communication with the employees as they have certain expectations from their leaders during these uncertain times.

Key Takeaways:

Ms. Divya Singh, HR Professional

  • Quickly adapting to the new changes, we have to learn to be agile as per the situation. This is also a good opportunity to adapt to new ways of thinking and to increase employee engagement and encourage them to think out of the box.

Ms. Richa Pandey, Head of Human Resource department, Machhapuchhre Bank

  • Everyone should be positive to survive from this global situation. People need to see the brighter perspective and opportunities by this COVID Crisis.

Mr. Kalyan Adhikari, CCO, Merokirana

  • Resource cutting should be the last option for enterprises.
  • Pointed out emerging new concepts of working from home

Mr. Sagar Satyal, Co- founder of My Emotions Matter

  • Always separate facts and feelings. Consideration should be given to emotional intelligence.
  • Labeling our emotions is necessary to move forward. As a leader, manage self awareness and communicate the need so that it doesn’t affect the team work.
  • We will never run out of crisis so building resilience is important and sometimes we need to shift our focus from ourselves to others.
  • Emotional demands should be acknowledged and should be expressed healthily so talking helps a lot.

This year has been challenging, and we are anticipating how things will be once we step out of COVID. And how will businesses get back after this global crisis? On 24th May 2020, panelists Abhishek Kumar, Director of Abhi Raj Ventures Pvt. Ltd, Sole importer of Wipro Consumer Care and Vinni Cosmetics, Prashanta Manandhar, Founder of Home Supplies Pvt. Ltd. and Suman Shrestha, director of Sales and Marketing, Hyatt Regency along with moderator Mr. Brijendra Joshi, Chief Executive Officer, Rooster Logic Pvt. Ltd. discussed how industries plan to step out of COVID-19 in Nepal. The webinar was organized by Brand Leaders Nepal, with creative partner Digital Advantage and sponsored by Aiken Anti Bacterial Range. As the webinar brought panelists from different business backgrounds, their discussion shed light on how businesses are coping in these times, and how they plan to move on once they step out of covid.

Panelists discussed how crisis management is important and businesses should try to seek opportunities amidst this pandemic. Sharing views on their respective field, from how the hotel industry got affected along with Nepal’s “Visit Nepal 2020 Campaign”, or how difficult it has been to operate the supply chain for consumer goods along with the survival of the business in the service industry, all the above businesses and many others have been equally affected by this pandemic.

Key takeaways :

Suman Shrestha, Director of Sales and Marketing, Hyatt Regency

  • Either you can look at things pragmatically and think what we can do differently or sulk in it. As one size doesn’t fit all, we have to learn to be adaptive in order to move ahead.
  • Even though there might be a time lag, the industries can still move forward and the Nepalese people will get back.

Prashanta Manandhar, Founder, Home Supplies Pvt. Ltd

  • It’s a difficult time for everyone but this too shall pass.
  • It is important to think about how are we going to come back from the crisis
  • Small businesses and start ups need to have faith and stay relevant. At the same time, some sort of pivoting may be the prerequisite to get on the track .

Abhishek Kumar, Director, Abhi Raj Ventures Pvt. Ltd, Sole Importer of Wipro Consumer Care and Vinni Cosmetics

  • As a business community, the primary focus should be on quality and application. In the post covid period, consumers will seek the value of money. Hence, quality products will be in demand.
  • Support local products/business to promote employment and avoid social impacts in the country.
  • Make use of new technology to catalyse the business as much as possible.
